Description
The disused signal box, located north-east of Weston-Super-Mare Railway Station, was built around 1866 for the Bristol and Exeter Railway and was extended in the early 20th century.
Constructed from coursed-squared limestone with Bath stone dressings, it features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan oriented from north-west to south-east, with a left-hand bay that is a later addition.
This two-storey signal box includes first-floor windows. The north-east elevation has windows with eight and 21 panes set in Bath stone frames, and the right-hand corner of this elevation is chamfered. Both the north and south gable ends contain a four-pane sash window, and there is a ground-floor door in the south gable end. All windows have been boarded over. An external wooden stair and porch are attached to the south-west elevation, and iron ties are visible at the south end.
Inside, there is a store on the ground floor and an operational room above, which was accessed via the external staircase. The building features a tie-beam roof, but the lever frame and all other operating equipment have been removed.
