Description
This is a group of twenty-one houses built around 1855, forming a crescent set back from the seafront and with a semi-formal park in front. The crescent is composed of a central block and flanking pavilions, linked by lower sections. The houses are constructed of Bath stone ashlar, featuring impost and cill bands to the ground floor, a modillion cornice, and a pierced parapet. The roofs are concealed. Chimneys are topped with modillion capping. The windows are plate and large-pane sashes, with architraves, keystones, and cill brackets. Most windows have segment-headed tops; the third floor of the central block and wings also feature this detail. Ground floor windows are arched, while the first-floor windows of the end pavilions are arched in a stilted style. Stone brackets support first-floor balconies, with some incorporating cast iron and panelled stone dies. The houses have panelled doors with plain, arched fanlights. The front gardens are enclosed by Pennant stone dwarf walls, and feature pairs of gate piers constructed of Pennant stone with Bath stone quoins and a segmented capping on a modillion cornice. The ensemble is recognised as one of Weston-super-Mare’s finest architectural compositions.
