Description

Numbers 3 and 4 are a pair of houses built in the mid-19th century as part of a planned terrace on the Hoe in Plymouth. They were designed as a group of terraces and villas by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick, a scheme that marked Plymouth as a leader in town planning at the time.

The houses are constructed of stucco with an asbestos slate mansard roof, featuring four attic windows and a moulded parapet cornice. Stuccoed stacks with moulded cornices are at each end. The design is double-depth, meaning the interior layout extends through two layers of rooms.

The exterior presents a symmetrical four-window facade. The ground floor features a tetrastyle Tuscan porch with a moulded entablature topped by a latticed balustrade, which is repeated over the flanking tripartite windows linked by a cornice string. Eared architraves with moulded cornices sit above the first-floor windows, while the second floor has a sill string with round brackets and eared architraves. Segmental-arched doorways have panelled doors. The original window openings now contain 20th-century windows. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

Attached forecourt walls and railings are also part of the listing.
