Description
A pair of houses built in the mid-to-late 19th century as part of a planned terrace. The houses are constructed of stucco with decorative stucco details, have an asbestos slate roof with projecting eaves, and include two attic dormers. Deep stuccoed end stacks are also present. They are designed as mirror-image properties, each having one room at the front, with a double-depth plan.
The exterior is symmetrical with a four-window front across three storeys plus an attic, and an underlying basement. The original hornless tripartite sash window with glazing bars and consoles is retained on the ground floor of number 9 (left), while other windows have been replaced in the 20th century. Number 11 retains its original 3/6-pane hornless sashes on the second floor, with later horned sashes on the remaining floors, including a tripartite sash on the ground floor. Stucco details include channelled rustication to the ground floor with keyed segmental arches over the windows, a central pair of pilastered doorways under keyed round arches, sill strings, pilasters, moulded hoods over the first-floor openings, moulded architraves and flanking bolection-moulded panels on the second floor, and a large console to the stepped eaves on the left. The doorways have plain fanlights and panelled doors, with the original door in place at number 11.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
Subsidiary features include forecourt walls and an entrance bridge surmounted by cast-iron railings with a roundel frieze and spear-head finials.
The buildings are included on the list for their group value as part of a significant terrace and villa development by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe. This development placed Plymouth at the forefront of town planning in the early to mid 19th century.
