Description

A pair of houses, numbers 30 and 31, with attached forecourt walls and railings, were built in 1829 as part of a planned development on the Hoe in Plymouth. The design is attributed to John Foulston, with remodeling occurring in the late 19th century. The houses are constructed of stucco over a probable rubble base, with a dry slate mansard roof hidden behind a parapet featuring a moulded cornice and a panelled central break. Four dormers with sash windows are visible in the roof. Brick end stacks are present, with the right-hand stack truncated.

The building has a double-depth plan and two storeys plus an attic over a basement. The front has four bays, with canted bays on the left and right sides, and an entrance bay for number 30 located to the left of the centre. Number 31's entrance is on Citadel Road. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes, with vertical glazing bars in most of number 30’s windows. Stucco detailing includes an original recessed panel on the ground floor centre, channelled rustication on the ground floor of the bay windows, a sill string, and moulded architraves to the first floor. Number 30 features a good entrance porch with an eared architrave, moulded entablature, and balustraded parapet, housing a six-panel door.

The interior remains uninspected but may contain interesting features.

The attached forecourt contains walls and wrought-iron railings with arrowhead finials and stanchions topped with flaming urn finials. An original iron gate with anthemion decoration serves number 30. These features are considered subsidiary.

The property forms part of an important planned group on the Hoe and was initially listed in 1954. Number 31 was separately listed on May 1st, 1975.
