Description

Numbers 59 to 73 and attached forecourt walls and railings are a planned terrace of houses dating from the 1870s, located on the north side of Citadel Road, Hoe, Plymouth. They are constructed of stucco with mansard roofs, largely covered in old slate or asbestos slate; Number 65 has a bitumen-grouted roof. The roofs feature segmental-headed dormer windows, with most having two windows each. Stuccoed end and axial stacks have moulded cornices and retaining many original pots. The parapet has a cornice with modillions and coped ends, plus stepped acroteria with moulded cornices.

The houses are arranged in a double-depth plan, with doorways in pairs. The exterior presents an overall 16-window range, with regular fenestration to the upper floors and windows to the left or right of the ground floor and basement. The windows are mainly original 4-pane hornless sashes, but some have been replaced with later horned sashes, and a few are 20th-century replacements, all within the original openings. Stucco detailing includes rustication and keyed segmental arches to the ground floor, alternate vermiculated and faceted quoins to the upper floors, and window architraves with moulded hoods on consoles. Shallow porches have vermiculated panels, moulded imposts, and moulded cornices, leading to some original panelled doors with glazed overlights.

The interior was not inspected, but is likely to be of historical interest.

The forecourt features fine quality original cast-iron railings with bottom and top friezes and spearhead finials, along with tall turned corner posts/lamp standards flanking the paired entrances. These are notable features of the terrace.

Numbers 59 to 73 are a distinguished example of a stuccoed terrace design, making a significant contribution to an important planned group.
