Description

Numbers 15 to 19 form a terrace of two and a half-storey houses built around 1829, likely designed by John Foulston. The buildings are constructed of stucco over probable rubble, with asbestos slate roofs (except for number 18, which has dry slate) behind stepped parapets. The houses have an overall 10-window range, composed of a half-pair on the left and two pairs, each with a symmetrical 4-window front, with the central section projecting forward. Original details include channelled rustication to the ground floor of number 15, recessed segmental-arched panels to the ground floor and sill strings across all properties. Most windows are 20th-century replacements with horns, but the basement of number 19 retains original 16-pane hornless sashes. Numbers 18 and 19 have original pilastered porches with segmental-arched pediments and moulded entablatures featuring a Greek key pattern; numbers 16 and 17 have a 20th-century porch retaining the pediment and return mouldings. The interior has not been inspected but may contain original features. In front of number 19 are forecourt walls and wrought-iron railings with arrowhead finials and stanchions topped with flaming urn finials. These elements were damaged during the Blitz. The terrace remains a good example of early 19th-century terraced house design and a component of an important planned group overlooking the Hoe.
