Description

Numbers 1 to 15 and attached road frontage walls and railings form a planned terrace of houses dating to the 1820s and 1830s, possibly designed by Foulston. The houses are constructed of stucco with stucco detailing, featuring dry slate or asbestos slate roofs concealed behind a parapet. The parapet incorporates a moulded entablature and cornice, with a turned balustrade to the centre of the right-hand house. Segmental-roofed dormer windows are present, along with deep brick axial stacks and an end stack on the left-hand side. Many old clay pots are also visible.

The buildings follow a double-depth plan, with each house presenting a two-window front and a doorway to its right. Original stucco detailing includes channelled rustication to the ground floors of the five houses on the left, a moulded mid-floor string above that, and a plain string on the houses to the right. Pilastered doorways feature moulded capitals and cornices, and five houses on the left and the house at the far right have moulded window architraves to the first floor. Most windows are replacement horned sashes with glazing bars, though some retain panelled doors. The interior of the properties has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.

Subsidiary features include ramped and coped stuccoed end walls to the forecourt, a road-frontage plinth, and wrought-iron railings with spear-head finials and turned stanchions. Railings also flank the steps leading to the doorways. The terrace is part of an important planned group of terraces and villas by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe, a scheme that placed Plymouth at the forefront of town planning in the early 19th century.
