Description

This is a villa, dating from the 1820s and 1830s, originally part of a planned group of villas on the Hoe in Plymouth. It is now used as a hotel. Built with incised stucco and featuring a dry slate hipped mansard roof concealed behind a parapet, the parapet has a moulded entablature and a balustraded central break. A panelled stuccoed stack with a moulded cornice is located on the left-hand side, and there are attic windows within the roof space. The house has a double-depth plan, likely with three rooms at the front and an entrance porch leading to an axial entrance hall towards the left.

The exterior is symmetrical with three bays, the central bay projecting forward. A single-storey porch is set back on the left. The front has late 19th or 20th century horned sash windows, with tripartite sashes in the central bay, topped with consoles and moulded hoods; the ground-floor sashes are taller. The porch has a moulded cornice and a pedimented front doorway with modillion cornices. The right-hand return displays three original 12-pane hornless sashes. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to contain features of interest.

The group of terraces and villas, designed by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick, made Plymouth a pioneer of town planning in the early to mid 19th century.
