Description

Windsor Villas No. 3 is a villa from the 1820s to 1830s, now functioning as a hotel. It is part of a planned group of villas and features incised stucco and a dry slate mansard roof behind a parapet with a moulded entablature and a balustraded centre break. The building has panelled end stacks with moulded cornices and attic windows adorned with incised pilasters and heads.

The exterior is two storeys plus an attic, with a symmetrical three-bay front where the centre bay is slightly projected. There is a single-storey porch set back on the left. The windows include late 19th or 20th-century horned sashes and original hornless sashes with glazing bars on the first floor. The central bay has tripartite sashes with consoles and moulded hoods, while the ground-floor sashes are taller. The porch features a parapet with a moulded cornice, a front doorway with consoles and a moulded hood, and a four-panel door.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is expected to be of interest. This villa is included as part of an important planned group of terraces and villas designed by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe, a scheme that positioned Plymouth as a leader in town planning in the early to mid-19th century.
