Description

This is a terrace of three houses located on Lockyer Street, Plymouth. They date from the early to mid-19th century and are part of a planned development, rebuilt following damage during the Blitz. The houses are constructed of stucco with detailing in stucco, and have dry slate mansard roofs behind stepped, part-balustraded parapets with moulded cornices. Each house has two attic windows, and stuccoed stacks with moulded cornices – the front stack over a bowed bay on the right-hand house (No. 24). The houses have a double-depth plan, with one room at the front.

The exterior is three storeys plus an attic, over a basement, with each house a three-window range. Original hornless sash windows remain on the second floor of No. 22, and on the upper floors of No. 23, though the lower parts of the windows there have lost their glazing bars. Later sash windows are present elsewhere. Nos. 22 and 23 have distyle Doric porches with unfluted columns on their left sides, while No. 24 has a similar porch positioned on its corner. The porches have overlights and panelled doors. Stucco details include channelled rustication to the ground floor, a moulded entablature above, and a mid-floor string to the upper floors.

The interior was not inspected but is likely to be of interest. The terrace is part of an important planned group of terraces and villas designed by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe, a scheme that was notable for its innovative approach to town planning in the early to mid-19th century.
