Description
The Presbytery, built around 1874 by Henry Clutton for the Society of Jesus, is a long, narrow, single-aspect building made of buff brick with stone dressings. It is attached along its north side to the Church of the Sacred Heart, which means it is mostly lit by the windows on its impressive south front. The building has two storeys facing the street and three storeys towards the garden. A central staircase tourelle with a conical spire is symmetrically flanked on each side by a pair of broad, three-storey, mullioned canted bay windows. There are half-hipped dormers set back behind the parapet. A west wing facing Post Office Road was added around 1920. The interiors are plain, featuring only an iron handrail on the staircase. The Presbytery and the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart are recognized as a group.
