Description

Lloyds Bank is an Italianate Baroque building, constructed around 1875, and stands three storeys tall. It is entirely faced in golden Ham Hill stone on the Old Christchurch Road side and features a splayed corner that aligns with the similar splay of The Royal Bank of Scotland plc. The Albert Road side is built in buff brick, accented with generous Ham Hill stone dressings and rusticated quoins.

The front on Old Christchurch Road has four windows, with a rusticated ground floor and round-headed windows above. It features a heavy dentil cornice, and the first-floor windows have individual balustered balconies and triangular pediments supported by console brackets. There are heavy cornices on both the first and second floors, topped with a panelled roof parapet. The splayed corner is rusticated on all three floors and has rounded corners. Above the main entrance, there is an open segmental pediment with dentils that continues the cornice from the ground floor. The entrance is framed by rusticated pilasters with foliage capitals, leading to a round-arched door frame with continuous fluted moulding, interrupted by criss-cross wreaths and ending with a sculptured keystone.

The Albert Road side has five windows and includes two subsidiary entrances, one within a slightly projecting bay and the other in a two-storey rear extension. Inside, the banking hall features a panelled ceiling with an egg-and-dart and dentil cornice, along with floral swags over the window frames. The space is divided into two by a screen of fluted columns and square piers.

Lloyds Bank, along with The Royal Bank of Scotland plc at Nos 49 and 51, forms a cohesive group.
