Description
This property comprises numbers 1 to 4A, Westover Road, including the canopy over the pavement and attached shops. Dating to approximately 1906, it is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, exhibiting a mixed Renaissance style across three storeys and an attic. The skyline features alternating straight gables, supported by consoles, alongside segment-headed dormers. The majority of first-floor windows are segment-headed, with prominent keystones to the second floor. The ground floor shops along Westover Road are characterized by a verandah-loggia projecting over the pavement, featuring Corinthian colonnettes, a fascia with an egg-and-dart cornice, and an Arts and Crafts balustrade with downward-curving sweeps within openwork pilasters. Numbers 13 to 17 on Gervis Road share the same balustrade and fascia, however, they include pendants. Hudson's grocery shop, formerly at number 13, originally had a notable front with arched glazing bars and tiling, although this was removed in 1974. The property is included for its group value, specifically the significance of the verandah within the streetscape, situated opposite the Arcade. Numbers 1 to 7 Westover Road and numbers 5 to 17 (odd) Gervis Place are designated as a group with Hinton and Westover Chambers on Hinton Road.
