Description

This is a pair of cottages located at 22 and 24 Hermitage Road, dating from approximately 1830 to 1840. It is possible that the buildings are an earlier structure on the Calthorpe estate, renovated into a pair of cottages before the mid-19th century expansion of the housing development. The cottages are two storeys high, constructed of roughcast brick with a steep gable-ended tiled roof. The central three-bay gable displays exposed purlin ends. Brick chimney stacks rise from the ridge, featuring triple groups of diagonally-set red brick. The ground floor windows are leaded casements with three panes each, incorporating plain, curved 'squashed' dripmoulds. Each cottage has a door of three narrow vertical panels, sheltered by a gabled bargeboarded hood.
