Description

Number 20, Westfield Road, together with Number 2A, Woodbourne Road, is a substantial house dating from 1893, designed by J. L. Ball. It is an early example in Birmingham of a "Wrennesque" style. The building is two storeys, constructed of red brick with thin stone sill courses to both floors. It has moulded eaves, a steep hipped slate roof with leaded casement dormers, and a tall brick chimney stack with round-headed panels.

The main entrance side, facing Westfield Road, has three bays, with a slight projection in the centre topped by a pediment. The windows are narrow, nearly flush-framed sashes, coupled above the doorway, each with a rubbed brick flat arch. The entrance itself is a stone-faced stucco surround with an Ionic pilastered design, a festoon carved into the lintel, an entablature, and a segmental pediment. Five bays form the north front, featuring a pent-roofed leaded light rectangular bay window at ground floor level. A lower service wing is located to the right. All sash windows are fitted with louvred shutters.

The south garden front is symmetrical, echoing the fenestration of the other elevations. A rectangular brick bay with a cornice is located to the right of the ground floor.
