Description

Nos 136 and 138 on Edmund Street, built around 1880, showcase Venetian Gothic style. The building is made of brick and terracotta and stands four storeys tall with five bays. The ground floor is articulated and painted, featuring outer arched entrances that are slightly broader and taller than the three central arches, each adorned with an enriched sexfoil in the tympana. The entrance to No 138 has a possibly later gable above it. The outer bays contain trefoil-headed sash windows; on the first floor, these are set beneath pointed arches with floral hoodstops, and on the second floor, they are placed beneath a gable. The three inner bays each feature two sash windows within a single tall lancet, complete with a hoodmould and floral hoodstops. Diaper work is present in the spandrels. The third floor is distinguished by a row of twelve narrow windows with bar tracery, and between these windows rise narrow brackets supporting a richly decorated cornice.
