Description

This is a group of six, three-storey townhouses, numbered 34 to 40 Villa Road, dating from the 1830s and 1840s. The houses are red brick with stucco dressings and are set at an angle to the road, each stepped back from its neighbour. They have hipped slate roofs with flat eaves and corniced chimneys. A stucco plinth runs along the front, and a sill band is visible on the first floor, returned to the window sills and continuing across the entire row of houses. The windows are revealed, with glazing bars, and sit within moulded stucco surrounds, flanked by consoles supporting shallow cornices. The sills are also stucco. The narrow doorways have panelled pilasters rising to ornately modelled console brackets supporting projecting cornices. Each door is four-panelled with a rectangular fanlight above. This group of houses has group value in demonstrating a cohesive approach to urban design.
