Description

The former Hamstead Road Baptist Church dates to approximately 1890 and was constructed in an Early English style using red sandstone with ashlar sandstone dressings. It features a front northwest tower with pinnacled angle buttresses and a broached spire. The principal northern facade has an arched entrance framed by granite shafts, with carved spandrel panels and an open cinquefoil within a stilted two-centred arch. A finialed and chequer-panelled gable sits above an arcaded balustrade, which flanks a lean-to roof extending to the sill of the central, slightly projecting west window, featuring quatrefoils and a central sexfoil at its apex. The main body of the church is surmounted by a finial. To the south, projecting towards the road, is an apsidal chapel wing, likely a baptistry, with gables to each face, above coupled lights and cinquefoils set within circular frames.
