Description
VILLA ROAD 1. 5104 Lozells B19 No 67 (formerly listed under Handsworth) SP 0589 SE 20/3 7.6.74 II 2. Includes Nos 110 to 114 (even) Hamstead Road. Corner site. Built 1904 as 'Ye Olde Toll Gate House', mock timber framing with Arts and Crafts details. Three storeys with broad splayed corner. Ground floor shop fronts with deep gulvinated fascia on shallow modillion brackets. Slate roof with overhanging eaves on iron brackets. Gables over shallow canted bay windows next to corner. The corner bay has picturesque octagonal oriel turret through 2 storeys with overhanging swept eaves to short slate spire with finial. Decorative Arts and Crafts leading to casement windows. In the top register of the close studded framing, across the cornice splay, are panels containing pargetted peacocks. The shop doorway of No 67 is recessed with panelling to wall returned to proportions of shop front, the corner light of curved plate glass. The doorway has beaten copper furniture and an elliptical oval light with decorative floral lead work to upper parts. Similarly leaded fanlight. Original scagliola mosaic work to floor of porch. Other 2 shop fronts modernised but No 112 doorway intact, double doors with oval leaded lights, guilded glass fanlight and oeuil de boeuf in stone frame above.
