Description
67 Villa Road, built in 1904 as 'Ye Olde Toll Gate House', is a three-storey building featuring mock timber framing and Arts and Crafts details. It is located on a corner site and includes Nos 110 to 114 Hamstead Road. The building has a broad splayed corner with ground floor shop fronts that have deep gulvinated fascia supported by shallow modillion brackets. The slate roof has overhanging eaves on iron brackets.
Gables are present over shallow canted bay windows adjacent to the corner, and the corner bay features a picturesque octagonal oriel turret that rises through two storeys, topped with a short slate spire and finial. The decorative Arts and Crafts style extends to the casement windows, and the top register of the close studded framing includes panels with pargetted peacocks across the cornice splay.
The shop doorway of No 67 is recessed, with panelling that matches the proportions of the shop front and a curved plate glass corner light. The doorway features beaten copper furniture and an elliptical oval light with decorative floral lead work above, along with a similarly leaded fanlight. The porch retains original scagliola mosaic work on the floor. While the other two shop fronts have been modernised, the doorway of No 112 remains intact, featuring double doors with oval leaded lights, a gilded glass fanlight, and an oeuil de boeuf in a stone frame above.
