Description
The Old Gate House, built around 1840, was constructed to replace an earlier tollhouse that was demolished during the railway line's construction from Bishopstoke to Gosport. The building features a design typical of earlier styles and stands two storeys high. While the sides are plain, the corner at Holmeland Lane has a distinctive half-hexagon shape. It has a hipped slate roof and is made of red brick, accented with yellow dressings. Notable architectural details include widely projecting double dentil eaves in alternating colors, quoins, a first-floor band, rubbed flat arches over the ground floor openings, and round arches above with keystones. All openings are recessed and include a plinth and stone cills. The windows are sash style, and there is a fanlight above the central door, which is topped by a street lamp on a wrought iron bracket. The doorway has a boarded opening above, possibly for toll charges, and there are coupled chimneys.
