Description
The Botley War Memorial was erected in 1920 to commemorate those who died in the First and Second World Wars. It was built by the firm of W Cornish, with a further inscription added after the Second World War. The memorial is constructed from Hopton wood stone and York stone and is set within the churchyard of All Saints Church, near the entrance gate and to the south of the church itself. It consists of a Latin cross placed upon four tiered steps. These steps are supported by a rectangular pedestal featuring a projecting cornice, a plinth with a projecting cornice, and a square, three-stepped York stone base. Each face of the pedestal is decorated with carved laurel wreaths. The plinth has flat recesses on each side for inscriptions. The east face is inscribed with a dedication in lead lettering, referencing the First World War (1914-1919) and including the phrase "Greater Love Hath No Man". This face also includes the inscription for the Second World War (1939-1945). The north, south, and west faces list the names of 33 servicemen who died in the First World War. Furthermore, the west face of the plinth lists the names of 12 servicemen who died during the Second World War. A cross-shaped memorial vase is positioned at the top of the base on the west side of the memorial.
