Description

No. 127 Soho Hill is an Italianate stucco villa built between 1850 and 1855. It features a richly decorated entrance to the stable yard on the north side and is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. The building has a plinth and deeply vermiculated rusticated quoins. The first-floor sill course is moulded and decorated with Greek fret, with the sills breaking forward on consoles. Below, the sill course is adorned with panels of small paterae. The main frieze is decorated with rosette paterae and has a dentil course below the eaves bed, supported by coupled modillion brackets.

The hipped slate roof has chimney stacks that have been cut down. The central doorway is flanked by Corinthian pilasters featuring panels of paterae, with a deep entablature and a bracketed cornice above. The door has panelled reveals and is a double panelled door with a rectangular fanlight. The ground floor windows are canted bays with slender Corinthian pilasters and slate pent roofs, while the first-floor windows have archivolt arches with Greek fret ornament and console keystones, supported by squat Corinthian pilasters. All windows have sashes with vertical glazing bars.

Vermiculated storey courses and other decorative details continue around the sides and on the chimney breast. The rear of the building has similar details, with a central break partly obscured by a later sloping wing that extends to a blind arcaded single-storey service range, which was likely originally used as stables. The stable yard entrance at the front features a cornice and parapet.
