Description
This is a group of four identical houses located at 2-8 Grafton Road, built in 1865. They are constructed of stuccoed brick, with slate hipped roofs concealed behind parapets featuring moulded cornices. Rendered brick stacks are located on the sides of the houses.
The houses are closely spaced and each features a two-room layout with a front verandah and a side doorway leading to a stairhall. They are designed in the Regency style.
The south-facing fronts are two storeys high and have two bays each. Each house has a ground floor verandah with ornate cast-iron openwork piers supporting a canopy with an ogee profile. To the left is a tripartite sash window, and to the right a canted bay with French casements and panelled shutters. The first floor has two four-pane sash windows, each with an ogee-profile canopy supported on ornate cast-iron brackets; at number 8, the zinc canopy has been replaced with lead. Glazed porches shelter panelled doors on the sides of the buildings.
The interiors retain simple marble fireplaces, moulded plaster ceiling borders and cornices, and original joinery. This includes panelled doors and dog-leg cut-string staircases with stick balusters, turned newels, and mahogany handrails.
The group represents an interesting example of mid-19th century stuccoed villas in the Regency style.
