Description
Chernocke House is a boarding house located at Winchester College, built between 1910 and 1912 by the architectural firm Nicholson and Corlette, with extensions added in the late 20th century. The building features a combination of flint and freestone blocks, with slate roofs that have parapeted gable ends and freestone coping. It has brick axial and lateral stacks topped with elaborate broad brick shafts that include set-offs.
The structure has an extended L-shaped plan, consisting of a three-storey master's house, a boys' wing, and two-storey service wings, all designed in a simplified Tudor derivative style. The exterior is asymmetrical, with two and three storeys and main ranges that meet at right angles. It showcases various large mullion-transom windows and gabled projecting bays. The entrance front on the northwest side features a projecting gable with a carved coat of arms, an integral round arch porch with a plank inner door that has wrought-iron strap hinges, and a squat tower in the angle topped with a parapet.
Inside, the building remains largely intact, including a newel staircase in the boys' wing, inscribed honours boards, and a refectory that features Delft tiles, a Tudor-style chimneypiece, and panelling. Chernocke House is recognized as a well-designed structure by an eminent firm of architects, exemplifying Tudor derivative architectural style.
