Description
Sergeant's at Winchester College is a boarding house built in 1869, likely designed by G.E. Street. It was later extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features red brick with some stone decorations and has a clay plain tile roof with stone-coped gable ends and pierced ridge tiles, along with brick axial stacks.
The structure has an L-shaped plan, with an extended wing to the west and 20th-century additions to the north and northeast. It showcases High Victorian Gothic and Domestic Revival architectural styles. The exterior is two to three stories tall, with an attic and basement. The east garden front is asymmetrical, featuring a 2:2:5:3 bay arrangement, projecting gables on both sides, and large sash windows with glazing bars set within moulded brick pointed cusped arches. There are later canted and square bays on the ground and first floors, also with large sash windows. A five-bay range is set back to the right of center, with pointed arch windows in tall pointed arch recesses, and the attic has gabled dormers. The south front originally has a four-bay range on the right, with pointed heads to the windows, two asymmetrical gables, a pointed arch doorway, and a timber oriel to the right. To the left is a later 19th-century three-bay extension with two gables, a string course, and large 12-pane sashes with flat gauged brick arches. The right-hand bay is slightly recessed and features segmentally arched sashes with a hipped dormer above. The left gable end has sash windows with glazing bars.
Inside, there are staircases, including one in the master's house with a pierced Gothic balustrade and another for the boys with an iron balustrade. The interior also includes chimneypieces and honours boards.
Sergeant's was purpose-built as a boarding house at Winchester College and was independently run by the housemaster. It is one of the boarding houses designed by a prominent Victorian architect.
