Description
Du Boulay's is a boarding house at Winchester College, built between 1862 and 1863, likely designed by William White. The building features a combination of flint, red brick, and tile hanging, topped with a clay plain tile roof that has gabled ends. It includes brick axial and gable-end stacks. The structure has a U-shaped plan, with the master's house located in the southeast of the front range and two wings at the rear that form a courtyard.
In the Victorian Gothic and Arts and Crafts style, the exterior is two storeys and an attic, with an asymmetrical south front that has five, two, and three bays. The master's house is on the right, showcasing three tile-hung gables and large wooden mullion-transom windows with segmental brick arches. The ground floor features a large square timber bay at the center and an oriel window to the left on the first floor. To the left, a five-bay range is set back, featuring a hipped roof, five narrow single-light windows on the first floor, and three-light windows with segmental arches on the second floor, with two tile-hung bays recessed on the right.
The east side has a projecting gable on the left that includes an integral pointed arch porch with a Tudor arch inner doorway, which has a studded door with strap hinges. There is also a tile-hung oriel set back at the center, supported by elongated brackets. The projecting range on the right has large windows with depressed 2-centred brick arches and a brick lateral stack. The rear features tile-hung gables, brick arched windows, and wings on either side, with the left wing displaying large depressed 2-centred arch windows, buttresses, and a large integral outshut on the gable end.
Inside, the master's house contains chimneypieces and panelled window shutters. The dormitories and former refectory showcase exposed beams on corbels and brackets. Du Boulay's was the first purpose-built boarding house at Winchester College, operated independently by the housemaster, and represents the work of a notable Victorian architect.
