Description

The Bournville Radio Sailing and Model Boat Club Boathouse, built in 1933, is a purpose-built structure for storing model boats and providing facilities for members. It is accompanied by a concrete boating pond.

The boathouse is constructed of timber, featuring elm weatherboarding and a pantile roof. Originally designed in a T-plan, later extensions have altered its shape to a roughly rectangular layout.

The exterior is clad in tarred rustic elm weatherboarding, topped with a hipped pantile roof that includes a central squared louvred cupola with a pyramidal pantiled roof. The central section has five bays and features a projecting gabled porch at the front, which has double wooden doors with an arched top to facilitate easy movement of boats. The windows are timber top-hung sashes, and the ends of the building have short hipped roof projections that are set back and unfenestrated. The rear includes a projecting section with two flat roof extensions, also clad in timber weatherboarding, flanking a central hip-roofed bay.

Inside, the boathouse consists mainly of a large open room used for storing model boats, with exposed roof timbers. At the north end, there is a fixed boat measuring tank, believed to have been installed in the mid-20th century. The rear and ends of the building contain additional small storage rooms and a kitchenette for members.

The teardrop-shaped boating pond located to the north of the boathouse is a purpose-built feature, designed with an even depth and a concrete base.
