Description
Bournville Junior School, built between 1902 and 1905 by W Alexander Harvey, is a notable red brick building with stone dressings and a slate roof. The design features a prominent square entrance tower on the left, which has a pointed arched doorway approached by steps. This doorway is highlighted by a bold keystone and is topped with an oriel window that has a carved base and a pointed stone roof. Above and to the left of the entrance is a clock. The tower is capped with a cupola, which was modified in 1934 and contains 48 bells. The cupola is supported by eight slender copper-clad columns and features a shallow ogee copper roof.
On the left side of the tower, there is another pointed arched doorway, also approached by steps, alongside a polygonal staircase turret that has a traceried window beneath its stone roof. To the right of the entrance tower, set back, is the central hall, which is illuminated by dormer windows in the roof and ends in a gable topped with a stone louvered structure. Projecting from the front of this hall are three lower gabled classrooms, with a fourth gabled classroom slightly advanced and a pointed arched doorway in a stone wall. Inside, the hall's roof is supported by lance curved braces, and it features frescoes created in 1914 by Mary Sargant Florence and Mary Creighton McDowall. The decorative carving throughout the building is by Benjamin Creswick.
