Description
No 1046 on Bristol Road is a late Regency, two-storey stucco country house built in 1830 by Sir Josiah Mason. It later became part of Woodbrooke College when acquired by George Cadbury, who donated it to the Quaker Settlement in 1903. The house underwent significant alterations and enlargements between 1908 and 1910, but these changes have been made to match the original style.
Originally, the entrance front featured a recessed center flanked by projecting wings, dressed with giant order Corinthian quoin pilasters. While the entrance and wings have been altered, one original wing with an added pediment remains. The south garden elevation is largely unaltered but has been extended. The original design included five bays with a shallow pedimented center break of three bays, all articulated by giant order Corinthian pilasters on moulded bases rising from a plinth. It features a first-floor sill course, a deep frieze, a dentil cornice, and a parapet. The windows have shallow architrave surrounds, and the first-floor glazing bar sashes are intact. The roof is slate.
In the 1908-10 alterations, five bays were added to the west in a matching style, along with an attic storey. The three-bay west return has the order returned supporting a pediment. The original east return retains two similar bays divided by a pair of giant pilasters. Although the interior was significantly altered during the 1908-10 renovations, the main staircase appears to be original, featuring a rectangular well, open string, and cast iron bannisters.
