Description

The Church of St Mary, located on Bristol Road in Selly Oak, was built in 1861 by E. Holmes. This solid Victorian church features a simple decorated style, highlighted by a banded effect created with two tones of sandstone. It has low aisles, buttressed transepts, and a clerestory. The steep nave roof is adorned with bands of tiles in two tones, and there is a lower chancel. A prominent broached spire crowns the northwest tower. The clerestory lights consist of groups of three quatrefoils set in panels. Inside, the stonework continues the striped effect, and the arcade appears rather squat, with the clerestory lights positioned under segmental arches.
