Description

The Selly Oak Institute, an adult education centre, dates from the late 19th century. It is built with a brick plinth and has a mock timber-frame appearance, topped with a tile roof. The building is an irregular composition, largely two storeys high, incorporating three gabled bays. Numbers 1 and 2 are approximately the same height and width, while number 3 is taller and about as wide as the combined width of the other two. Number 2 is recessed. The entrance is up steps and into a slightly advanced, two-storey porch, with a polygonal upper section located in front of the left-hand part of the broad third bay. The windows in the two smaller bays are casements with glazing bars. The wider third bay contains transomed four-light windows with leaded lights; the mullions and transoms are stone on the ground floor and wood on the first.
