Description
This boathouse, designed in 1938, is located opposite the entrance to White Lodge in Horning on Lower Street. It features a timber frame with low waney-edged clapboard walls and a half-hipped thatched roof. The building is single storey, with the gable facing Lower Street and the rear opening onto the dyke. The front has a pair of part-glazed garage doors, while the long sides are fitted with metal casements that have leaded lights set in wooden frames, featuring unusual sunk mouldings. On the left side, there are two 3-light windows, and on the right side, beneath an eyebrow in the thatch, there is a door flanked by two-light casements and a further 3-light casement. Facing the dyke, there are a pair of wooden open-work lattice doors that close the wet dock.
Inside, the wet dock has a plank-floored walkway around three sides, with open framing supporting a collar rafter roof and steel trusses at intervals. The front part facing the road is boarded. This finely-crafted boathouse represents the development of the Broads for recreational purposes in the early 20th century.
