Description

Birch and Jada are a pair of bungalows built from timber with shiplap board cladding and a thatched roof. They are arranged in a rectangular plan, oriented from south-west to north-east, with small kitchen blocks projecting to the rear of each bungalow.

The main elevation of the bungalows faces the River Bure. The walls are covered in horizontal weatherboarding, and while the main pitched roof is thatched, the small kitchens at the back have felt roofing. A deck runs across the entire front elevation, featuring a verandah that is inset along most of the central frontage, supported by slender posts topped with crown posts. The windows are timber, designed in a multi-pane neo-Georgian style. Each bungalow has three side-by-side panelled doors and a nine-light window that opens onto the verandah. At each end, there are multi-pane windows that wrap around from the front to the side elevations, angled at the corners.

Inside, the bungalows maintain their original layout, which includes a main living space and four bedrooms in each. Jada has an additional fifth bedroom created at the rear, next to a kitchen extension added in 2021. The bungalows are divided by timber board walls, with kitchens and lavatories located in the projecting rear blocks. Most ceilings are finished with plasterboard panels, except for Birch's kitchen, which features a timber panelled ceiling.

Original fixtures are present throughout, including cupboards with panelled doors, shelving, and in Birch, two original wood-framed fixed bedsteads, indicating that the interior may have been fitted out by boat fitting specialists. All windows retain their original metal handles and catches, or have been repaired with similar fittings. Most internal doors are original, although Jada has two doors from the early 21st century.
