Description

The Horning War Memorial is a First World War memorial with an addition for the Second World War, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Benedict, which is also listed at Grade II*. It is positioned to the east of the churchyard path leading to the church.

The memorial features a stone Celtic wheel-head cross, adorned with carved knot-work on the cross-head and the upper half of the shaft. This cross rises from a four-sided, tapering plinth topped with a moulded cap, which sits on a single-stepped, rock-faced base. The lower half of the shaft and the plinth display inscriptions in incised lettering that is painted black.

The main inscription is located on the west face of the shaft and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN ENDURING REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF HORNING." This continues on the plinth below with the words: "WHO FOUGHT BRAVELY AND SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919. ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW PARISHIONERS" followed by 11 names. Directly beneath, on the upper surface of the base, are the words: "MORS JANUA VITAE."

The dedication for the single casualty from the Second World War is found on the north face of the plinth, stating: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN ENDURING REMEMBRANCE OF (NAME) ROYAL NORFOLK REGT WHO SACRIFICED HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WORLD WAR 1939-1945 WHOSOEVER SHALL LOSE HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE SHALL SAVE IT."

The memorial is set within a small, square gravelled area, which is a later addition.
