Description
The Old House in Ranworth is a brick house, colourwashed, with thatched and black pantiled roofs, dated 1754. It has an 'L' shape, formed by an 18th-century lobby entrance farmhouse of two storeys and attics, extended to the east by a mid-19th century wing with a hipped roof, and internally with a continuous single-story rear outshut. Later lean-to extensions with hipped and flat roofs are located to the north. The facade of the 18th-century wing, facing south, features an off-centre two-story porch with a boarded entrance door above it and a battlemented parapet. The eastern end has French casements, and there's a pilastered doorcase with a cornice. There are 2 and 3 light windows with wrought iron casements. Segmental brick arches support the ground floor windows, while timber lintels top those on the first floor. The building has a brick plinth, a platband at the first floor and on the gable at the attic floor level, and parapet gables with brick kneelers. 20th-century dormers are located to the north. An axial stack is centrally positioned and there's an east end stack. The entrance facade of the east wing faces east and is three bays wide, with the central bay slightly forward and pedimented at eaves level. The central bay contains a six-panel door with a semi-circular fanlight and radially decorated leaded lights, set within a timber doorcase with an architrave, reeded pilasters, and an entablature with patera blocks and a dentil cornice. Sash windows with glazing bars and segmental gauged brick arches are in each bay. A timber cornice with mutules is continued into the pediment. The wing has a hipped roof and rear chimney stacks. The interior of the 18th-century wing features some roll-moulded ceiling beams in the central cell.
