Description
This is a pair of symmetrical semi-detached stucco villas, dating to circa 1830-40, located on Bristol Road in Edgbaston. The villas are two storeys high, raised on a verandah terrace that conceals a basement. The main block has four bays, with slightly recessed one-bay wings. The lower ground floor of the wings originally contained pig houses.
The main block features a channelled ground floor, a first-floor sill band, a moulded cornice, and a low parapet with coping. A central stucco chimney stack rises above the roof. The roof is low-pitched and covered in slate. A prominent lattice Greek Doric columned verandah stretches across the front of the building, supported by terminal pilasters, and is topped with a later glazed roof. The ground floor has three broad windows, with the central window blind. Flanking the windows are recessed architraves framing doors consisting of five deeply moulded fielded panels, each with a rectangular marginal glazed fanlight above.
Long flights of steps, flanked by coped retaining walls, lead up to the terrace and doorways. The terrace wall is pierced in the centre of each front to allow light to the basement windows, incorporating decorative iron grilles. The first-floor windows are revealed with glazing bars. The inner first-floor windows are slightly closer set than the outer ones, which are positioned above the doorways. The one-bay wings feature similar sashes on the first floor, with circa 1850-60 canted bay windows above the altered pig house doors.
