Description
The Corinthians is a substantial villa built around 1855, located on Bristol Road in Edgbaston, Birmingham. This two-storey building features five bays and is faced with stucco, topped by a hipped slate roof. It has corniced stucco chimneys with arcaded panels. The channeled ground floor is adorned with canted bay windows that rise from moulded sills, separated by Corinthian pilasters that frame the sash lights.
A richly detailed Corinthian column porch enhances the entrance, while the ground floor entablature has a dentil cornice that projects over the bays and porch. The blocking course serves as a sill for the first-floor windows. The windows are round-headed with moulded reveals and feature a roll moulded string at the impost level, arching over from angled acanthus leaf stops. The main frieze has a bed mould with an incised key pattern, and the flat eaves are finished with a moulded bed.
Stringcourses and other decorative elements are returned to the side elevations. On the south side, there is a wooden conservatory with arcaded lights, where the dividers are topped with consoles, and a ridge lantern completes the design.
