Description

This listing describes a group of a chest tomb and 12 headstones located approximately 2 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary. The chest tomb dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and is marked with the date 1748. It is made of carved and moulded ironstone and features simple nook-shafts and a projecting moulded top. The short sides to the east and west have fielded panels, while the north side has an oval panel and the south side displays shield panels.

The headstones include examples from the mid to late 17th century and early 18th century. One mid to late 17th century headstone has a shaped top and a sunk panel. A late 17th century headstone features an open segmental pediment with a winged head and an entablature, along with composite half-columns and a fielded panel. An early 18th century headstone displays a broken pediment with a head, a swag with a winged head, and twisted pilasters. Another early 18th century headstone has a shaped top with a winged head, large crossed palm leaves, a fielded panel, and volutes with festoons. One headstone from the early to mid-18th century has a segmental top, a scrolled pediment with a winged head, a fielded panel in a moulded surround, and a running pattern. The remaining headstones are not noted for their special architectural interest.
