Description
This is a group of nine headstones located east of the south porch of the Church of St. Michael. They date from the mid and late 17th century and early 18th century and are made of carved ironstone. The headstones are arranged in three rows.
One headstone, dated 1644, features a simple design with a shaped top and a sunk panel. Two others have a shaped scroll top with a central head; one is dated 1675 and includes a panel with a moulded architrave that is eared at the top and bottom, inscribed to Thomas Wats. The other, dated 1676, has a moulded panel and sides adorned with garlands, inscribed to Henry Tue.
Three headstones display a large cartouche, two of which feature a winged head. One dated 1719 includes four putti and a skull at the base. Another headstone from 1677 has a winged head and a circular wreathed panel, inscribed to Dorothy Tue. Additionally, two headstones have segmental tops, a central head, festoons, and a fielded panel, with the one from 1702 being in high relief. Two of the headstones are also inscribed on the reverse.
