Description

Springfield House is a house dating from 1539, substantially raised and altered in the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone rubble with irregular quoins, and has a slate hipped roof with stone ridge and end stacks. The house follows a U-plan, with wings extending to the rear.

The front elevation has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range. The entrance features a chamfered four-centred arched doorway with a 20th-century part-glazed door, set within a round relieving arch containing a datestone inscribed with initials "S DMD". To the left is a renewed three-light stone mullioned window with a hood mould, and below it, three-light 19th-century casement windows with horizontal glazing bars and painted wood lintels. A first-floor window on the left is set at a higher level.

The left return side is of ashlar construction and has a three-window range, with a central leaded half-glazed four-panelled door and overlight. The windows are mullioned, with a central transom. First-floor windows are three-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, and stone lintels with keystones. The right return side features a long, irregular wing. A 20th-century recessed porch is present. The windows are mostly renewed mullioned, two and three-light designs, with some featuring hood moulds. A chamfered doorway is at the right end. The interior has not been inspected.

The house was likely built for the Davies family, and is included on the list primarily for its group value.
