Description
27 Rother Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It likely dates from the 17th century but was refronted in the 19th century. The building features painted brick with some stucco on the internal timber frame, and it has a tiled roof with a central break and brick stacks at both ends and in the middle.
The house is two storeys high and has a four-window range. It is topped with a modillioned brick cornice. The entrance, which is segmental-headed, is located in a two-storey gabled stuccoed porch to the left of the center. This porch includes a key over a panelled door and flanking roundels. There is a first-floor sill band beneath a window that has a plate glass horned sash, along with a top moulded verge and a roundel in a panel.
On either side of the porch are two-storey canted bay windows with top cornices and hipped roofs, featuring 2:4:2-pane horned sashes. The right end of the building has a carriage entrance with a first-floor flat-roofed half dormer that contains three small-paned lights. Some exposed timber framing is visible on the right end of the building.
At the rear, there is exposed timber framing above the entry, and a 19th-century and late 20th-century gabled wing adjoins a range of shops that are not included in this listing. Some of the windows at the rear are sashed. Inside, the ground floor has been significantly altered and features chamfered beams.
