Description

32 and 33 Rother Street are two town houses dating from the late 16th century or 17th century, with alterations made around 1800 and in the 20th century. The buildings are timber-framed with brick and coursed rubble infill. The left half, No. 32, features a brick front with buff headers and a first floor that has been partly rebuilt in the 20th century. The houses have a renewed tile roof with two brick stacks at the front of the ridge. They are two storeys high and have a four-window range. No. 32 has a top modillioned cornice and a central segmental-headed entrance with a plank door. The entrance to No. 33 has a 20th-century plank door. The ground floor windows have 20th-century small-paned casements, with one window to the left of centre having a segmental head. The first floor of No. 32 has two windows with 20th-century casements, while No. 33 has two gabled dormers with two-light leaded casements and iron opening casements. No. 33 also features full-height posts with a middle rail and tension braces, along with a panel to the ground floor left end that has rubble infill. The rear of the buildings has a catslide outshut with later alterations. The right return is brick with a window on the first floor. These houses were probably originally outbuildings to No. 28 Wood Street.
