Description
39 and 40 Rother Street are two town houses that have been converted into offices. They date back to the 17th century, with a refronting around 1800 and some alterations made in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of brick with a rubble plinth and feature an internal timber frame. They have a tile roof with a brick stack positioned across the axis.
The houses are two storeys tall and present a three-window range. There is a platt band above the ground floor and a top cornice with modillions made of brick. The entry on the right side has a segmental arch leading to a plank door, while the left side has a modern door, as does the entrance at the left end. On the ground floor, there are two large windows flanking a smaller one, all fitted with late 20th-century glazing. The first-floor windows are two-light casements, also modern.
At the rear, there is a catslide roof with exposed timber framing on a single-pitch wing to the right and an entry passage to the left, featuring various small-paned casements. Inside, the building showcases exposed chamfered beams.
