Description

Two town houses, situated at 32 and 33 Sheep Street, date from the 16th or early 17th century, with a refronting around 1800. The buildings are constructed of brick with buff headers, revealing an internal timber frame, and have tile roofs with a broken pitch and brick stacks at the rear. They are two storeys high and feature a two-window front. No. 32, on the right, has a top modillioned brick cornice. A segmental-headed entrance with a 19th-century bell pull is to the left of a canted bay window incorporating small-paned glazing. The first floor features a segmental-headed window with a three-light casement, also with small-paned glazing, and an iron opening mechanism. No. 33 has a round-headed entrance with a tympanum above a 20th-century plank door, which now provides access to a flat, positioned to the left of a bow window with a decorative frieze and cornice and small-paned glazing. The first floor window in No. 33 has a sill and a cross-casement, with a smaller, high-level window to the left. A small addition with a shop window on the right return reveals some original timber framing elements, including a wall post head, tie beam, brace, and a section of the principal rafters. The interior contains some chamfered beams and a partition wall with missing infill.
