Description
Nos. 21 and 20 Waterside is a house, which was later used as a public house and is now a shop and flat. The original core of the building dates to the 17th century and was refronted around 1800, with a second floor added later. The construction is mainly brick, with some internal timber framing, and the roof is tiled with a brick end stack. The gable end faces Waterside.
The building is three storeys high and has a five-window front. A brick cornice runs along the top. A canted entrance has rich ashlar moulding above a pair of half-glazed doors. There are three shop windows and a carriage entrance to the right end, featuring wrought-iron gates. The upper floor windows have brick sills and brick flat arches over 16-pane horned sashes on the first floor. The second floor windows are 2-light casements with small panes.
The return side facing Sheep Street is similar in appearance, with remnants of a painted sign reading "WHEAT[SHE]AF INN". Two shop windows are set in ashlar surrounds with a frieze and dripstone. A wall post is visible on the ground and first floors at the left angle.
The interior features broadly chamfered beams on the ground floor and some exposed framing on the rear wall. The first floor is noted to have a braced tie beam.
From the 1880s, the building operated as The Wheatsheaf public house. It is included on the list for its group value.
