Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Wood Street, which also includes No. 40 High Street, are two shops and an office built between 1840 and 1841. The building is designed in the Georgian style and is constructed of stucco with a hipped slate roof featuring three brick cross-axial stacks. It stands three storeys tall and has a seven-window range, with a recessed rounded angle and a single window range facing High Street. The wide eaves soffit is supported by slender paired brackets.

The entrance to the office is located to the right of the centre and features a six-panel door. To the left, the shop front extends around the angle and includes pilasters, a deep frieze, and a cornice, with an entrance at the angle flanked by Ionic columns. This shop front has plate glass windows and glazed doors. The shop front on the right is simpler, with a central entrance, a deep frieze, and a cornice, and features a half-glazed door. The upper floor windows have sills, with twelve-pane sashes on the first floor and six-pane sashes on the second floor, while there are blind windows at the angle. An enriched iron sign bracket at the angle is currently without a sign. The building extends to the right as part of Debenhams, Nos. 3 and 4.
