Description

4 and 5 High Street is a shop built in 1920 by the architects Osborn, Pemberton and White, with FC Bayliss as the architect for WH Smith and Son. The building features a brick structure with a timber-frame facade and a tiled roof. It stands three storeys high and has a three-window range. The large shop front includes windows with upper leaded lights, 20th-century doors with leaded overlights, and end consoles to the cornice with a canvas canopy. There is a Tudor-headed entrance on the left with a plank door.

On the first floor, there are five-light transomed oriels flanking a three-light window above an embossed lead plaque with a quotation from Shakespeare. The second floor features five-light windows with enriched lintels and gablets with enriched barge-boards, flanking another three-light window. The building also has good rainwater heads and downspouts, along with a plain bracket for an old-style painted sign. The rear of the building has been extended to connect with the premises at 17 and 18 Bridge Street.

Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters and stained-glass lights depicting famous authors, including Shakespeare and Bacon. This building is a well-preserved example of the architecture in Stratford-upon-Avon that reflects the town's Elizabethan heritage, which was being restored during that period.
