Description

45 and 45A Wood Street, along with 65 Henley Street, is a town house that has been converted into shops. It dates back to the early 16th century, with a rear addition from the early 20th century. The building features a timber frame with plaster infill and a renewed tile roof topped with a brick end stack.

It stands three storeys tall and has a two-window range, with the upper floors jettied on curved brackets. The early 20th-century shop fronts have bowed windows with leaded upper lights and entrances with glazed doors. The first floor showcases five-light oriel windows, while the second floor has five-light projecting windows, all adorned with leaded glazing. The close studding is complemented by angle brackets and a moulded central bracket on the second-floor oriel.

The rear range is two storeys high with a three-window range, featuring a tile-banded brick ground floor and a timber-framed first floor. It includes two shop windows with leaded upper lights and recessed glazed doors, flanking a segmental-headed entry that has a tile arch and a battened segmental-headed gate with open slots at the top. The first floor features two canted oriels with gables, arranged in a 1:3:1-light configuration, alongside a two-light window, all with leaded glazing.

Inside, there are some exposed chamfered beams and framing, making it a well-preserved example of 16th-century architecture, enhanced by the sympathetic rear addition.
