Description
Barclays Bank, located at 20 Bridge Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, is a former town house that has been converted into a bank. It was rebuilt after the fire of 1641 and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber-frame structure with a brick rear wing and a tiled roof. The facade, largely from the 20th century, is three storeys high with a two-window range. The first and second floors are jettied and there are two gables. The late 20th-century ground floor is recessed, supported by two posts to a bressumer, which was recorded as having two caryatids in 1972. The first floor has paired 18-pane sash windows, while the second floor features late 19th-century four-light transomed projecting windows. The building showcases close-studded framing and has moulded barge-boards with finials. Some timber-framing is visible on the left return, along with ogee-headed stair windows on the first and second floors that have small-paned glazing.
Inside, the bank has an open-well staircase with fretted splat balusters, a moulded handrail with dentils, and square balusters, some of which have finials. The interior also reveals exposed timber-framing. It has been recorded that traces of frescoes dated to 1677 and earlier foundations are visible in the basement.
